About Mr. Groth
Mr. Groth is originally from a small town in Connecticut but has been living in Colorado since 2004. He is a graduate of Colorado College with degrees in Anthropology and Southwest Studies and Master's degree in Elementary Education. He is married to a teacher, has two young sons, two dogs (Garlic and Osage), six chickens, and several thousand honey bees.
While at Colorado College, I took a course titled “Cultural Astronomy of the Southwest.” In the classroom we studied and examined texts on astronomy, physics, and the cultural importance of the cosmos to the Native American tribes of the Southwest. At night we we would meet as a class on top of the college buildings for lectures and observations of the stars and planets. After more discussions and research in the classroom we went into the field. We toured the Ute Mountain Ute Indian Reservation and saw solstice markers that had been expertly carved hundreds or thousands of years ago. We spent time talking with and interviewing tribe members. As a student, these experiences were empowering. As a teacher it has been my goal to inspire students to learn and push for a deeper understanding of what they are learning and how they learn through emotional experiences.
